An Unfair Initial Trial...

NOTICE : BEFORE I BEGIN, THIS POST IS NOT TARGETED AT ANYONE. I DO NOT WRITE BLOGS TO SPECIFICALLY TARGET YOU. IN CASE YOU THINK YOU ARE THAT SPECIAL ONE I WILL SPEND 1/2 HOUR TO TYPE ON, DREAM ON.

In the case I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, is the unfair ruling many have given to Alan Mak and Andrew Lau in their latest movie, Initial D.

The ruling? That it sucks to the god damn core and many have rated it as "Buy the Pirated VCD!" or even worse, "Download it!!!"

Surprised? I am. Amongst many of the movie go-ers, I'm sure many agree with me that the movie is AT LEAST above average, but a few "critics", disappointed that their "high standards" have not been met, sent this movie straight into hell by condemning it for eternity as "the worst spin-off movie ever"

Before I continue, here are the TOP 5 REASONS why people HATE THE FILM.

1. This movie is nothing like the anime at all.
2. Jay Chou sucks, he can't act, he's nothing like Takumi.
3. Theres so little races.
4. The storyline sucks.
5. The drifting is so unrealistic.

As many would agree, these 5 points are the "oh so typical" responses of these "critics", Singaporean ones at that. Let me break it down and perhaps share a more neutral point of view, starting from the last one, to the first.

5. The drifting is so unrealistic.
Or is it? Drifting is an art, an art not known to many, an art not many can master in months, in which is probably the amount of time (I'm guessing) that Jay, Shawn, Edison and Jordan had to train and hone their drifting skills. They had to be professionally trained and from what I hear, all of them have racing licenses by now.

(Sidenote on drifting) *Skip if you're not interested*
Making the above statement : are you comparing the movie with your so called "Realistic" drifting in Initial D the anime? Do not forget that the anime uses CG (Computer Graphics) to generate the track, cars and other parts of the scenery involved. In my opinion, the drifting in the movie has been quite well executed, along with some tricks of cinematography, they managed to make all the drifts look really fast (whereas when compared to those professional racers, they are actually slower). Or are you comparing your drifts with the ones in probably the most unrealistic "drifting" game I have ever seen, the Initial D Arcade Stage series by SEGA? There are many many definations of drifting sprinkled all over the internet, but here is my personal interpretation :

The art of executing "Controlled Spins"; causing your vehicle to literally slide through a hairpin or turn with little or almost no traction at your rear wheels at all and having your car almost perpendicular to the direction you are travelling.

In Short : Drifting isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.

4. The storyline sucks.
Before you say something like that the next time, think about this : Can you write a better storyline? Or are you comparing the movie with the anime again? I will explain this again in the last segment.

In Short : Writing a storyline isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.

3. There are so little races.
This comment is very, very common amongst Singaporean viewers. Another common description is "There is so little action", in the case of other movies. Many have yet to realize that movies isn't all about action, or in this case, races. In the entire Initial D Anime (until 3rd stage) you can count the amount of races with both your hands.

So why didn't anyone get pissed? Or maybe that IS the reason why Initial D never really took off locally; not enough action! If a show is just totally about mindless action, then I think that movie has failed, and you'd get bored of the action anyway. By the way, War Of the Worlds won't have as much action as many think there will be, so here's a warning for you guys, before you condemn another good movie.

In Short : If Initial D were races from start to end, would you like it more?

2. Jay Chou sucks, he can't act, he's nothing like Takumi.
I have to clarify one thing first. Jay, for one, almost didn't have to act at all in the movie. He was just being himself, and many will agree with me on that. Next point to note, I SERIOUSLY cannot think of any other actor, that has the same bored face that Jay has. Takumi = Expressionless, Jay was also almost expressionless in the movie, especially while driving. Takumi is NOT supposed to be a REALLY good looking guy, Jay (I know many people will kill me, especially Jay fans) is NOT the most handsome singer/actor I know of. To be honest, Jay was everything I expected from Takumi "coming alive" And again, if you can act better, prove me wrong.

In Short : Being an actor isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.

And Finally...
1. This movie is nothing like the anime at all.
Woah there, since when did ANYBODY said that the Initial D movie was ANYTHING like the anime at all? For those who stayed back and watch the credits roll all the way, there is a part that says that it has nothing to do with the Initial D Anime series at all, that it is just an "adaptation" of the "Initial D" series. To me, that means that they used everything except the actual anime storyline. Prove of what I say is true? You shouldn't be surprised that most of the people who said that Initial D was a good movie never watched the anime at all, or didn't know that it existed at all. Go figure.

In Short : Stop comparing the movie with the anime!!!!

I have also taken on the herculean task of trying to perhaps, give some tips on how Singaporeans can enjoy movies better.

1. Don't let hype get to you.
For me, I have stopped listening to all sources of "information" that relates to how good or bad a movie is BEFORE it is released. Many shows are "Hyped up" so much, the show is actually ok, but because of everyone's high expectations of it, everyone says it sucks because it lacked this lacked that. Shows are mainly spoiled by many because of hype. Initial D is unfortunately a victim of this.

2. Enjoy the movie.
This might sound stupid, but many forget that a movie in the end, is still just a movie. Everything locally is taken so god damned seriously, can you blame the government for being serious in everything? What happened when watching a movie was just to burn time and have a good time? If the show made you laugh, then I think it did its job. (Unless you are laughing at its mediocrity, in which I rest my case).

3. Watch a movie you want to watch, not what others want you to watch.
This is hard to explain, but what I mean is, do not watch a movie because of any other reason other than YOU wanting to watch it. If you don't intend to watch the movie, DON'T! Your mind is already pre-emped that its going to suck etc etc etc.

4. Be Neutral.
Another tough one to explain. Don't hate a movie or condemn it just because a actor/actress you hate is in it. Many people miss good movies because of that. Also, this works the other way. Just because an actor/actress you like is in a movie, doesn't mean that it will gurantee a Oscar award.

Thats all I have to say. You can say its a rant, you can also say its my personal view on movie viewing.

If you have had the patience to read this far, thanks and i applaud you.

*Rant Alert*

*Disclaimer*

Whatever I say here is my own view of what things are going on. At least thats what they happened to me. This post does not allow comments. Why? Simple. I don't need yours. Thats what blogs are for aren't they? If you want to read, carry on. If you don't, go type something in Google or go to Disney.Com and go wild. This post is rated NC16 for "Mild Language" (if you follow Singapore's rating system for movies)

After going through so many years of life, I don't know if I have changed or not. People say I do, and people say I don't. Thats life isn't it? People change, everything changes.

Unfortunately, some people in this world do NOT accept change.

They deny it, and they love those they think are good, and condemn those who they hate. This sounds like what everyone else does right? Wrong. This people stick with it all their life. If they hate vegetables just because brocolli was the first vegetable they were introduced to, they'd hate it all their life. If Friend X was good to him during his childhood days, he'd think that he'd be good to him forever, although he's stabbing him right in his face.

What does this have to do with me? Simple. Take the last example I sited and turn it around. Just because I was unruly, untidy, unreliable, irresponsible, irritating, idiotic, clumsy, dumb, and maybe even downright stupid 4 years ago, doesn't mean I am today.

What made me want to write this? Everything has to have a beginning and an end doesn't it? It all started when I realize my parents still treat me like a 15 year old kid although I am 21 already then. The flame was kept burning with snide remarks like "I'm surprised you made it". Until just recently, my brother, my very own flesh and blood brother said to me.

"You have never changed since the first day I know you and you never will"

Touchë

That got me real mad. All the efforts I put into trying to making myself more "socially acceptable" seemed to have gone down the drain hasn't it? After that hurting remark, more came. Took them all in my face.

The one that hurt the most? I'd have to tell you a little bit of history. I did some trailer/teasers for the New Nostal Show and one of them used Spybreak (From The Matrix soundtrack). I already knew it was not THE best track to use since its a little too common. I asked for more ideas, nobody got back to me with a proper one. To this date, after two requests for a better song (Since I can't find one) I still hve no responses or follow ups.

What to do? I based the starting of the first episode of the New Nostal Show on the song. I tried many other songs but they didn't fit in somehow, or gave the same impact that Spybreak did. After deciding on using Spybreak again, I showed my brother and Zhenjie the video. Before even the "Nostalgic Production Presents" word totally showed up, my brother straight away said

"This song again? Why the fuck can't you find a better song?"

Sounds like a death sentence before a fair and proper trial? You bet. As if to add fuel to the fire, Zhenjie said

"I told him already, just never listen"

My blood reached boiling point right after that sentence and lashed out to defend myself. The video hasn't even properly started, not even finished watching the video, you condemn whatever you are seeing already. Be fair to me. I'd definately ask for comments after the whole thing, if nothing was good about it, say so. If nothing was bad about it, say so. If you have pointers or comments, leave them till the end of the video. And my brother said I can't take criticisim. If I can't take it, I would have given up doing the video altogether by then.

My brother carried on with the video in the end, but he muted the speakers. That was the ultimate insult, but I could only watch. Who ask me so weak? I never stood up for myself because I know it'd lead to quarrelling and arguements so I'd rather step down to avoid a fight all together.

Most recent attack? When I told Zhenjie this evening that my headphones started to make funny cracking noises (damage to headphones due to heavy bass) which was weird, and was wondering if he'd know why (since they were such good headphones and he owned them too.) Instead, all I got was this fuckload of shit.

"Well nothing surprising, I'm just surprised it lasted so long...."

Nothing I own can last more than a year doesn't it? That was true 2 years ago, I couldn't even let it last a month, but this has lasted for almost a year already, and I damaged it quite a few times, mainly freak accidents and not through negligence. I'm seriously sick of all this attachment of traits to me and not giving me a chance to prove myself.

I'm not spared from this even with my family. My parents, cousins etc. My only salvation would perhaps be only diana and my camp mates. Diana used to be like that, but she has changed (thank god) or I'd go mad by now.

Of course, while everyone else is reading this, it'll become another "long winded one by William, just let him be, always like that".

Not as if anyone cared anyway. Living in a cage of cold steel with solid cement flooring is already bad enough, living in a cage forged by the beliefs of your loved ones, best friends and family, is a fate almost worst than death. I try breaking these beliefs, but like some alien substance from Mars in Sci-Fi movies, after breaking the metal bars, they form back up, stronger than ever. I'm trying to change, and I try real hard, but whatever I do, good or bad gets related to a bad thing I've done in the past and I get locked down like a Starcraft Battlecruiser; able to stay afloat but otherwise useless while remaining vulnerable to more attacks.

My singing sucks, I can't do street magic even if my life depended on it. I have enough things to put me down already, and just when I need to turn to someone, just when I think I've done something that I feel I put a lot of effort in, I get put right back down.

Is it my fault? Partly, because I, like a fool, let them put me back down, maybe even deeper from where I started off. Is this fair? Nope, but life isn't fair either. What can I do but bitch about it, since nobody around me ever listens to what I say or do anyway.

So if for some unknown reason you are reading this, I'm sorry I had to bore you to tears with this fuckload of crap, but this is just what my life is right now; crap.

Thanks a lot, my friends and family, thanks for the support you've been 'giving' all these years.

Fuck this world

Progress So Far...

I've finally decided on the format and I figured out that I can render audio in Dolby Digital standards! The SPPV:TLV DVD will be PAL, Region 3 (I'm trying to find out if I can just disable it) and all audio will be in Dolby Digital Audio format. More details when I can.

Remember I said I'd attempt to break into the international scene? It isn't working out as well as I thought it would be, I offered virtually every video we did and so far the response has been less than lukewarm, if not downright cold. Not a single response so far. I try to participate more in other topics but they talk about things that has nothing to do with us or things I don't really understand.

I don't know about it, but so far only Alan (From HKPPD) and Kyah (an International Paralist that runs Http://www.parapara.us/) responded so far and I'll be upping the videos to them as soon as I can. Koneko from ParaParaStage.com or anyone who can make a decision hasn't given an answer or even responded.

Singaporeans have never been seen as much in the eyes of the international scene, not only in Para Para but in other ways too. There has been reports that Singaporean Chat Users and Gamers are rated the biggest bullies and I should know that, Singaporeans aren't very popular in most MMOGS (Massively Multiplayer Online Game) as they are mainly cheat users or abuse certain powers or abilities.

I'm still optimistic about breaking into the international scene, but with such a response, I can't help but feel that we're not going to get in... All I can do is Pray...

Internet Connection

Ok, let me get this message over once and for all.

My Internet Connection is in a pathetic state. It will not allow me to stay online for longer than a stretch of an hour (the record was 2 hours). I have highlighted this problem to Qala and Singtel and they have not yet responded.

Until this is remedied, I will not and CAN NOT send any files to anyone, simply because its frustrating to keep sending and sending a file that I know will never be finished. So please do not bug me for any thing else UNTIL I say I will start sending.

If you can't wait and want the video badly, call me or e-mail me to arrange to meet up at my house at Jurong to have the videos burnt into a CD. This is really the best I can offer until then.

However, before I continue, I need feedback. Which would you rather have? A beautifully rendered (But big) MPEG4 or DiVX Video or Lacklustre (but small) WMV Video? I have plans for this videos which I will reveal later but it has something to do with DVDs *winks*

So what will it be? Let me know. Here are the files and their sizes, just for your info *heh heh*

Anyway, I will make an official announcement of my plans tommorrow so watch this space!

Announcement by Founder

Ladies and Gentlemen of Nostalgic Productions and PPSG,

The new year has come and gone, and it is a time of resolution, a time of change. As last year drew to a close, I started making plans and a direction for NP to take. But first, let me talk about 2004.

2004 was a eventful year for the world around us. The Iraq war, Saddam's Capture, the Presidential Elections in USA and just recently, an act of god that held the world in awe; the 8.6 richter scale Indonesian Earthquake/Tsunami Tidal Waves double disaster. My condolences to all those affected by this horrible event and it certainly was the lousiest way to start a new year.

The year 2004 was rather, unfortunately, uneventful for the Paralist community, with only 1-2 performances throughout the year, mainly repeats of older performances. Not that the older performances are bad, it is understandable as many did not have the time to spend creating, mixing and choreographing new performances. Although there were many plans to move NP to new levels, the lack of interest and enthusiasim irked me.

Although having planned to restart the SPPV2 project, after filming the training videos, everybody was busy putting their daily/weekly activities in front of their filming schedules. I do not blame them, but I blame myself for not having a firm hand, and for not having better leadership qualities.

In the end, nothing was done regarding SPPV2 and it was again put on indefinate hold. The project that has spanned 2 years in the making has come to a standstill again. All I could do was watch in despair as the interest in the paralist community wained.

But not all was bad in 2004. The end of year event M.A.D performances were brilliantly executed and planned and I have Sam and Paraluke to thank for that. Without them, the whole event might have been a total screwup. Kudos to both of them.

Of course, not forgetting the dancers who put in time and effort for this year's excellent performances; Victor, Steven, James, Jonathon, Toby, Diana, Janice, Sam, Chrislint, Yanwei, Weiming, Yvonne, Alvin, Candy and Xueli. (If i forgot someone, please forgive me). The 4 performances this year were phenomenal and it certainly shows that Singapore paralists have the standard and while my time has already past, I could not help but feel proud for you all.

Enough about the past, lets move onto the future and the path that I intend to take for NP this year, 2005.

I have mentioned diversing into other areas of dance for the past 1 year and I haven't really done anything about it. I've talked to Toby about this and this year, I want to at least do one performance that is 100% Pop dancing.

Before I continue, allow me to explain what is Pop Dancing and why I call it that. Pop dancing simply means learning the moves and dance steps from popular pop songs (yes, you guys have done this before!) be it English/Mandarin and simply performing it. Why don't I call it Modern Dancing or Hip Hop? Its simple, the dance steps used in these performances can't be sufficiently catagorized into the two above mentioned genres. I have ask for help from Toby regarding this and he has agreed to help despite the fact he is the vice-president for his school's dance society and that he is already a very busy man. I am sincerely honored by your willingness to help me in this, Thank you.

So there you have it, I will be outlining more on this in a seperate meet and I hope you guys will attend it. What about Para Para dancing then? Of course, NP will still have Para dancing as a mainstream dance and it most probably will stay that way.

PPSG has been around for about 2 years, unfortunately, it has only been a name used to describe the group of Singapore Paralists and not a real entity that we can relate to. The efforts Paraluke, KC and I have spent to try and make this successful has come to nil and I've decided not to continue it anymore. Para Para Singapore will still remain a name to describe us but I've decided to concentrate my efforts on NP now.

What does this mean? As I mentioned last year, NP was not absorbing the still defunct VOX into its strength, it was merely facilitating the group, and they were considered under PPSG. With the dissolving of PPSG, that would leave them pretty much stranded. I have thought of this and I know I will lose a lot of the members that I had when we used last year's concept. But I understand that NP was not well-liked from the start and some feelings of dis-taste remains in many and do not wish to be associated with the group or being under NP.

I am now asking for sincere dancers, sincere paralists to join my group under my group's name, Nostalgic Productions.

What is the difference? Many will ask that question and I will answer it right now. As the facilitator last year, I emphasized, I could not and will not do anything to you if you decided not to turn up for a meeting or missed a performance as I'm only the facilitator. When directly under me, as your founder/leader, I will not tolerate latecoming or last minute changes. Some might say I will become a dictator or a slave driver. But look at it this way, when I ask for a filming/practice session, I only need 4-5 hours of your valuble time, and it most probably will span from late morning to early/mid afternoons (1000hrs to 1500hrs) and I certainly will not take up every weekend or holiday that you have for practice/filming sessions.

So what is my target? My target, ladies and gentlemen, is just twice a month, on alternate saturdays, for roughly 4-5 hours (like mentioned above). Is it too much? Or is it too little? We will settle this when we meet up one day.

My goals this year is very simple, 3 performances; 1 Pop-Dancing, 2 Para and one for the end of the year M.A.D of 2005. Think its realistic? I think it is and I hope you guys share the same views. I hope I can throw SPPV2 filming into the schedule this time and finish it once and for all.

I would also like to mention the "retiring" of someone who I respect very much in choreography and dancing abilities. By now you should know who I'm refering to, and that is Victor Lai, aka VictorXNO, ex-leader of OPX/VOX and Chief Choreographer to me. He has decided to leave the Para scene once for good and I respect his decision. He is currently a regular in the air force and has little time to commit to the group and I understand his difficulties. I hope he succeeds in his future endevaours.

Who then, would take over choreographing in NP? As of now, there is no one on a permenant basis but I have decided to take on this important role. I have not done anything like that since my EuroFest 2002 performance at National Youth Council's HQ opposite Cathay Cineleisure and I hope I can live up to everyone's expectation (whoever joins the group that is). I will be assisted by Toby and hope that he can help me as much as he can in this, especially in the Pop Dancing area.

I am now currently trying to break the ice between local and international paralists and I have already sent out whatever videos I have to the kind folks at www.paraparaparadise.net and I'm discussing with the people at www.paraparastage.com about hosting the videos.

With so many changes, so many different things, I do not expect much to join me in my pursuit. But I hope those affected can understand why I want to do this. There are rumored attempts to start the next para para boom again in Japan and I do not want Singapore to be left out again like the last time. I don't want Para Para to die off in Singapore just like that, that would confirm the predictions of dancers from other genres that Para Para is just a stupid arcade machine fad, that it is silly and won't last long. I can and will not allow this to happen to Para Para.

I myself will most probably be performing in this year's performance (if time permits me) and when I lead a group, I have certain expectations. There might be conflict, there might be trouble, but I hope we can ride it out together and make this a great year for Paralist and Para Para, not just locally, but internationally.

With this, I end the announcement and I hope I will hear from you guys soon. Thank you for taking time off for reading this lengthy announcement.

Night Cycling!!!

All right all right, it all started out as a yearning for a better new year celebration, it turned out into a blast!!! After meeting darren and his friends (they kickass by the way, bought satay and beer and just shared it without saying a word) with my brother at ECP, we discussed what we could do for the night.

It was on IRC, when guoqiang said he wanted to cycle, and it was set. Darren was a anything guy, I certainly didn't mind, my brother hasn't cycled for a while, we instantly had a convoy of 4!

But that wasn't all, I couldn't possibly leave the rest behind, those who made the last trip a success also namely, Jeremy, Marvin, Mervin, Gabriel, and they all turned up. But lo and behond, the person that totally surprised me was Zhenjie when he agreed to join us! Marvin had a sprained ankle but hesistated at first, but he knew he couldn't miss out on the fun and decided to brave it. We all set to meet at 8:15 at ECP to rent the nessecary equipment, namely the bikes itself. After renting the bikes, it was a short trip down to Traffic Light where we had a whoopass dinner and settled down to talk cock all night. When it struck 11, we all set off alas without Zhenjie; he was uncontactable!

Marvin had to come over to my place to change to a better pair of shorts while Zhenjie was still uncontactable. We decided to leave without him and carried on to Esplanade without him. On the way, my phone rang and there he was! It seemed that he had problems with his mother and he had a hard time getting away from her. Accepting his apology, me, Guoqiang and Jeremy decided to turn back to my house and wait for him.

When he arrived, we set off full speed for Kallang Airport Hawker Center to meet the rest of the convoy, all the while raining apologies for his latecoming. We didn't really mind, it wasn't his fault anyway.

Our first destination was Esplanade, as always. As we arrived there, the convoy broke in two, the faster ones in front, the slower ones at the rear. The faster ones caught sight of a buncha girls on the One fullerton bridge and decided to wait for us before doing anything else. Marvin and me decided to go after them and with my brother leading, the chase was on! We decided to go on an intercept course on where they were going and went straight for them.

Unfortunately, either they pulled a david copperfield on us, or we were really blind, we couldn't find them at all.

"Someone should have gone after them while the rest stayed behind" remarked Marvin. How true...

"Too bad" was all i could say and we decided to make a stopover at Peninsular Plaza for our supplies of sweets and drinks that would accompany us during the trip. Gabriel wanted to head down to Orchard to meet up with ed and des. Since we didn't really have a destination, we decided to go there to meet them. Zooming down orchard on your bike is certainly an experience and I really want to do it again.

"They're at Partyworld next to HMV" shouted Gabriel. And that was where we ended up to meet both Ed and Des. We had a short chat there. To be continued...

Rant?

I don't know what to title this blog, i suppose its just my way of describing my day.

As night falls on the damp soil of my flight's training ground, I can't help but wonder what lies ahead of me; what is going to happen in the next few months? Caelan's in a childcare now, my in-law's house has almost become mine, Diana got transferred to another department, all in a few short weeks.

As the night training began, the wailing of the worn engines of the machines drowned my thoughts out, making me return back to the small and crampy ops Room. Twirling the keys, my mind wandered yet again...

Today i was short handed, very very short handed. Eugene had to help the other guys, and dennis was the ops controller, leaving me with every possible POL bullshit to handle all alone. I'm glad i got them sorted out more or less and i'll be finished by tommorrow afternoon, free to leave (i clocked 1/2 day off because i stayed back for the night training) without worries and to continue with my video editing.

I'm shacked out now, I might start typing out my thoughts daily now, since thats whats a consarned blog for anyway. I will be doing a new site for NP news, in conjunction with a plan for a humour site =D Stay tuned, i just might share more of this idea.

Nos out
