An Unfair Initial Trial...
NOTICE : BEFORE I BEGIN, THIS POST IS NOT TARGETED AT ANYONE. I DO NOT WRITE BLOGS TO SPECIFICALLY TARGET YOU. IN CASE YOU THINK YOU ARE THAT SPECIAL ONE I WILL SPEND 1/2 HOUR TO TYPE ON, DREAM ON.
In the case I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, is the unfair ruling many have given to Alan Mak and Andrew Lau in their latest movie, Initial D.
The ruling? That it sucks to the god damn core and many have rated it as "Buy the Pirated VCD!" or even worse, "Download it!!!"
Surprised? I am. Amongst many of the movie go-ers, I'm sure many agree with me that the movie is AT LEAST above average, but a few "critics", disappointed that their "high standards" have not been met, sent this movie straight into hell by condemning it for eternity as "the worst spin-off movie ever"
Before I continue, here are the TOP 5 REASONS why people HATE THE FILM.
1. This movie is nothing like the anime at all.
2. Jay Chou sucks, he can't act, he's nothing like Takumi.
3. Theres so little races.
4. The storyline sucks.
5. The drifting is so unrealistic.
As many would agree, these 5 points are the "oh so typical" responses of these "critics", Singaporean ones at that. Let me break it down and perhaps share a more neutral point of view, starting from the last one, to the first.
5. The drifting is so unrealistic.
Or is it? Drifting is an art, an art not known to many, an art not many can master in months, in which is probably the amount of time (I'm guessing) that Jay, Shawn, Edison and Jordan had to train and hone their drifting skills. They had to be professionally trained and from what I hear, all of them have racing licenses by now.
(Sidenote on drifting) *Skip if you're not interested*
Making the above statement : are you comparing the movie with your so called "Realistic" drifting in Initial D the anime? Do not forget that the anime uses CG (Computer Graphics) to generate the track, cars and other parts of the scenery involved. In my opinion, the drifting in the movie has been quite well executed, along with some tricks of cinematography, they managed to make all the drifts look really fast (whereas when compared to those professional racers, they are actually slower). Or are you comparing your drifts with the ones in probably the most unrealistic "drifting" game I have ever seen, the Initial D Arcade Stage series by SEGA? There are many many definations of drifting sprinkled all over the internet, but here is my personal interpretation :
The art of executing "Controlled Spins"; causing your vehicle to literally slide through a hairpin or turn with little or almost no traction at your rear wheels at all and having your car almost perpendicular to the direction you are travelling.
In Short : Drifting isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.
4. The storyline sucks.
Before you say something like that the next time, think about this : Can you write a better storyline? Or are you comparing the movie with the anime again? I will explain this again in the last segment.
In Short : Writing a storyline isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.
3. There are so little races.
This comment is very, very common amongst Singaporean viewers. Another common description is "There is so little action", in the case of other movies. Many have yet to realize that movies isn't all about action, or in this case, races. In the entire Initial D Anime (until 3rd stage) you can count the amount of races with both your hands.
So why didn't anyone get pissed? Or maybe that IS the reason why Initial D never really took off locally; not enough action! If a show is just totally about mindless action, then I think that movie has failed, and you'd get bored of the action anyway. By the way, War Of the Worlds won't have as much action as many think there will be, so here's a warning for you guys, before you condemn another good movie.
In Short : If Initial D were races from start to end, would you like it more?
2. Jay Chou sucks, he can't act, he's nothing like Takumi.
I have to clarify one thing first. Jay, for one, almost didn't have to act at all in the movie. He was just being himself, and many will agree with me on that. Next point to note, I SERIOUSLY cannot think of any other actor, that has the same bored face that Jay has. Takumi = Expressionless, Jay was also almost expressionless in the movie, especially while driving. Takumi is NOT supposed to be a REALLY good looking guy, Jay (I know many people will kill me, especially Jay fans) is NOT the most handsome singer/actor I know of. To be honest, Jay was everything I expected from Takumi "coming alive" And again, if you can act better, prove me wrong.
In Short : Being an actor isn't easy, don't judge unless you're capable of proving you can do better, and stop comparing the movie with the anime.
And Finally...
1. This movie is nothing like the anime at all.
Woah there, since when did ANYBODY said that the Initial D movie was ANYTHING like the anime at all? For those who stayed back and watch the credits roll all the way, there is a part that says that it has nothing to do with the Initial D Anime series at all, that it is just an "adaptation" of the "Initial D" series. To me, that means that they used everything except the actual anime storyline. Prove of what I say is true? You shouldn't be surprised that most of the people who said that Initial D was a good movie never watched the anime at all, or didn't know that it existed at all. Go figure.
In Short : Stop comparing the movie with the anime!!!!
I have also taken on the herculean task of trying to perhaps, give some tips on how Singaporeans can enjoy movies better.
1. Don't let hype get to you.
For me, I have stopped listening to all sources of "information" that relates to how good or bad a movie is BEFORE it is released. Many shows are "Hyped up" so much, the show is actually ok, but because of everyone's high expectations of it, everyone says it sucks because it lacked this lacked that. Shows are mainly spoiled by many because of hype. Initial D is unfortunately a victim of this.
2. Enjoy the movie.
This might sound stupid, but many forget that a movie in the end, is still just a movie. Everything locally is taken so god damned seriously, can you blame the government for being serious in everything? What happened when watching a movie was just to burn time and have a good time? If the show made you laugh, then I think it did its job. (Unless you are laughing at its mediocrity, in which I rest my case).
3. Watch a movie you want to watch, not what others want you to watch.
This is hard to explain, but what I mean is, do not watch a movie because of any other reason other than YOU wanting to watch it. If you don't intend to watch the movie, DON'T! Your mind is already pre-emped that its going to suck etc etc etc.
4. Be Neutral.
Another tough one to explain. Don't hate a movie or condemn it just because a actor/actress you hate is in it. Many people miss good movies because of that. Also, this works the other way. Just because an actor/actress you like is in a movie, doesn't mean that it will gurantee a Oscar award.
Thats all I have to say. You can say its a rant, you can also say its my personal view on movie viewing.
If you have had the patience to read this far, thanks and i applaud you.
